From 1915 to 1919 he served with the A.I.F. and in 1926 he joined the R.A.A.F. until 1947 and achieved the rank of Wing Commander. After his retirement, Knight was the Secretary of the Taxpayers' Association of Victoria, wrote the "History of the Australian Club Volume 11" and completed his autobiography "These Things Happened".
