Agent TypePersonActivities & OccupationsAcademics - PsychologyHistoryDr. Frank Knopfelmacher was born in Vienna on 3rd Feb. 1923 but raised in Czechoslovakia. He died aged 72 in Melbourne on 17th May 1995. He survived the Holocaust after fleeing Czechoslovakia in 1939 and returned there to study at Charles University, Prague 1945-1948 but left following the 1948 Communist coup. He resumed study in England at Bristol University completing his BA in 1950 and his doctorate in 1953 from University College London. In 1955 he took up a lectureship in Psychology at the University of Melbourne where he remained until his retirement in 1988. Dr. Knopfelmacher was however better known as an essayist, public speaker and commentator on current events and politics. He wrote regular columns for "The Age", "The Australian", "Nation Review", "Quadrant" and made frequent contributions to "Letters to the Editor" columns. He also wrote regular book reviews through- out his career, while his views on current political events were often sought by the media.
