Thake worked as a draughtsman in the Royal Australian Air Force from 1943 to 1946. Returning to civilian work in advertising, he was later employed at the University of Melbourne Department of Visual Aids. Thake retired in 1970. His work as an independent artist was well-regarded and he exhibited solo shows at several galleries in Victoria including the National Gallery of Victoria (1970).
