He left for the Californian diggings in 1850 but returned and came to Victoria in 1852 where he became involved in quartz mining on the Bendigo reefs. He secured interests in various mines that he subsequently amalgamated in the Kentish Mine which he owned until his death. Watson acquired immense wealth through his mining interests and at his death owned large numbers of properties in Melbourne and other states. (His victorian assets were valued for probate at 976,549 pounds.) Watson died in Sydney on 4 Jun 1889. His estate was subject to much litigation to resolve technical difficulties. His executors were John Boyd Watson [jnr], Malcolm Donald McEacharn and William Cain.
