As a Citizen Force Officer he served in administrative positions until his appointment in the AIF in 1939. Lieutenant-Colonel Weate served in the Middle East and on his return to Australia was appointed Assistant Adjutant-General at Land Headquarters. In 1944 Weate was selected as Liaison Officer with the U.K. Reception Group for released Prisoners of War from Europe. He was transferred to the Reserve of Officers in 1947, and in 1951 appointed to the Regular Army as Staff Officer, Commander and later Assistant Quartermaster-General at Army Headquarters.
