She returned to Australia in 1982. From 1991 she was a senior lecturer and associate professor of Social Work at the University of Melbourne. Wendy's work encompassed social policy, social work theory, the women's refuge movement, Indigenous issues, and the Partnerships Against Domestic Violence program as well as teaching and feminism. She died unexpectedly in 2004 shortly after her retirement from the University.
