Marshall-Hall was appointed in 1889, Laver assisted Marshall-Hall in establishing a conservatorium of music (a cherished project of his own) which opened in 1895. Here he taught until the University refused to renew Marshall-Hall's appointment and his conservatorium was lost to the University. Laver became Acting Professor, then Vice-Director of the new University Conservatorium under Professor Peterson, having once more been passed over in his application for the Chair. A further opportunity arose when Peterson died in 1914, but Marshall-Hall was reinstated. On the latter's death in 1915, however, Laver became Ormond Professor of Music, holding the post until his retirement in 1925.
