The Rialto Building was designed by William Pitt for businessman Patrick McCaughan and constructed in 1890–91. In the early 1980s the Rialto was retained whole, restored, and combined with a new rear wing behind the adjacent Winfield building as part of their redevelopment into a hotel, originally the Menzies at the Rialto, opening in 1984.
