He studied law at Lincoln's Inn and was admitted as a solicitor and attorney in 1829. He emigrated to Victoria in 1850 and practised as a solicitor and notary. He acted as a solicitor for the Montefiore brothers as their papers show. a'Beckett served as a Member of the Legislative Council in the Parliamant of Victoria for over twenty five years and on numerous boards of directors. He was chairman of the Hobson's Bay Railway Co for more than twenty years. He was registrar of the Anglican diocese from 1854 to 1887. He died at Brighton on 1 July 1892.
