The group was formed in part to produce the Aboriginal community newspaper Koori-bina, inspired by earlier paper Abo Call. Koori-bina ran from the late 70s until 1979, when it became Aboriginal Islander Message (AIM).
BWA also broadened its goals into education, teaching students of Aboriginal and Islander Dance Theatre the skills to take over the publication and raising funds for a number of women to study undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications at Harvard University, including Roberta Sykes, Norma Ingram and Mary Ann Bin-Sallik. The group also helped fundraising efforts to prevent Shirley Smith from losing her house.
