[1992.0172] Papers of Georgina Sweet
Description
IdentifierUMA-ACE-19920172Extent3 archives boxes, 13 index card boxesPublicationLinear Meteragenot specifiedScope and ContentThis collection contains published material gathered by Georgina Sweet in the course of her research (Units 1 to 3) and sequences of index cards created by Sweet, recording citations and notes on academic literature and her research (Units 4-16). The collection also contains a file of testimonials written by colleagues in support of Sweet's application in 1912 for Chair of Biology, University of Western Australia (Item 1992.0172.00002) and nine pages of research notes by Sweet (Items 1992.0172.00001 and 1992.0172.00003).
Published material comprises 124 reprints, journals, bulletins, reports and other publications in date range 1893-1941. Some publications are in French, Italian and German. Publications include reprints of seven papers presented by Georgina Sweet to the Royal Society of Victoria between 1896-1904, and four journal articles written by Sweet, published in The Quarterly Journal of Microscopical Science, 1906, 1907, 1909 and in Parasitology Vol. IV (1) March 31, 1911.
Full citations of reprints and publications have been included to provide insight into Sweet's areas of research, and to enable researchers to locate online versions. As many of the publications were severely water damaged prior to transfer to UMA, alternative access to online versions where available is encouraged to avoid handling the physical items. The Baillieu Library and other academic libraries offer links to e-journal collections, which provide access to digital versions of many of the the items held in the Sweet collection.
The index cards are arranged in various sequences, which reflect a taxonomy of Sweet's research interests. Sequences identified include Cestoda; Arthropoda; Nematodes; Hosts, under which cards are arranged alphabetically by topic. Date ranges of sequences vary; sampling indicates evidence of note making from 1893 to 1935. Some cards were not written by Sweet. Cards appear to have been originally stored in filing drawers. Some have a cardboard label at front printed University of Melbourne Veterinary School. Some card sequences appear to have been disrupted. It is difficult to discern the original arrangement for all, and to confirm if the research card collection is complete.Archival History(https://biosciences.unimelb.edu.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0004/2857765/Georgina-Sweet-and-the-Tiegs-Museum.pdf)
