However, by the time of his death in 1884 he called himself an architect. Barnes partnered with Joseph Reed in 1862 to form the architecture firm Reed & Barnes. He retired in 1883 and Anketell M. Henderson and Francis J. Smart joined as partners to create Reed, Henderson & Smart.
