He was articled to the Ballarat architect H.R. Caselli before joining the Melbourne practice of Reed & Barnes. In around 1881 he returned to Ballarat and entered into partnership with Charles N. Gilbert, forming the practice Tappin & Gilbert which operated through the 1880s. Following Anketell Henderson’s departure from the firm Reed, Henderson & Smart in 1890, Tappin became a partner of the practice, forming Reed, Smart & Tappin. He died in 1905, but his name remained in the title of the firm until 1907.
