He worked as a builder and contractor on several major Melbourne buildings, including the Royal Exhibition Building in 1879-1880, for the architectural firm Reed & Barnes (predecessor organisation to Bates, Smart & McCutcheon Pty Ltd). He was also involved in various other enterprises, including grazing and wine-making on land in regional Victoria. Mitchell was the father of ten children, including his eldest daughter, Helen, later known as the celebrated singer Dame Nellie Melba.
