At the invitation of the Prime Minister, Mr. E G Whitlam, Justice Woodward conducted a Royal Commission into Aboriginal land rights in the Northern Territory. His first report was presented in July 1973 and recommended the establishment of Aboriginal Land Councils aimed at providing a united Aboriginal voice for advice and advocacy in the Territory. A final report was presented in April 1974. The commission paved the way for the Northern Territory Land Rights Legislation which was enacted in 1976. He later acted as Chairman of the Aboriginal Justice Committee. The papers reflect these activities.Archival HistoryThe pdf list to 2002.0026 was converted to item data in the course of the Miegunyah Project 2021/2022. Boxes were inspected in March 2022 and some amendments were made to the list to clarify titles and enhance scope and content, particularly by adding Aboriginal place names and names of Aboriginal people to item descriptions. Items were uploaded on 15/3/2022.

Further relisting will occur as part of the Indigenous Discovery Project in 2025; contains Cultural Heritage of Yolngu people, Arnhem Land; the Warlpiri and Gurindji peoples of the Northern Territory; and the Meriam people of the Murray Islands (which includes Mer, Dauer and Waier Islands) in the Torres Strait.
