Listed by Sarah Brown August 2004-March 2005.
NOTE ON COLLECTIONS: The record keeping structure appears to have been generally decentralized and Jigsaw records were created and maintained by various office holders and members of the Jigsaw Executive. File creators included Jigsaw Secretaries, Presidents and Vice-Presidents, and “File holders”, who maintained search files. Many records transferred to UMA came from Robert Bender, Founding President, 1976-198, and the majority from David Hirt (1937-2005), President, 1982-1986. As the Jigsaw Trust wound up in the 1990s, the Archive contains the complete record of the organization, apart from most of the search files, containing client information, which have been transferred to the Dept. of Human Services, Adoption Records. Note also that some records created by David Hirt in the course of his post-Jigsaw work have been retained within the Jigsaw collection. Hirt’s membership of organizations including VANISH, his work as a consultant to the Victorian government in 1988-1989 on the Adoption Information Service Review, and his ongoing involvements in issues such as surrogacy, were considered to continue the adoption reform interests of Jigsaw.
NOTE ON LISTING: As there was no apparent official record keeping system for the bulk of the records, many series have been listed under the names of Office Holders, and series and item numbers have been imposed to assist researchers. All relevant contextual information has been retained. In order to preserve provenance, the name of the person who donated the records has been given in the item description (eg. [Hirt]). This is because some of the records have been bundled together in a single series. Note also that many of David Hirt’s papers have been kept in separate series in order to preserve provenance where possible.Collection CategoryCommunity and PoliticalAccess StatusAccess restrictions apply for some itemsRequest Access to RecordsRequest records from this AccessionSearch within this Accession
