IdentifierUMA-SRE-20160062Extent26 sheetsScope and ContentTwenty six sheets of large scale watercolour botanical illustrations used as teaching aids for teaching Botany. Each is inscribed with the names John Macadam MD at lower right and N. Stewart Del, Edin (Delineator, Edinburgh) at lower left, in Macadam's handwriting. Most sheets have notes in Macadam's handwriting on slips of paper inserted through slits, identifying the species or part of the plant shown on that sheet. Numbers in the form B/n are inscribed in ink at upper right (broken series). Holes in each corner of the sheets indicate the sheets were pinned to a wall or board during use. The works are by Edinburgh illustrator, Niel Stewart. At least one was based on an earlier published source (Thea sp. based on an illustration by WJ Hooker, 1832, published in Curtis' Botanical Magazine). It is likely the illustrations were brought from Scotland to Australia by Macadam when he migrated to Melbourne in 1855. These sheets were used by Macadam while teaching Natural Philosophy at Scotch College. After Macadam's death his widow transferred his teaching equipment to the University where Macadam taught Chemistry from 1862. The illustrations were used by later staff of the School of Botany, two sheets show the handwriting of botanist Dr Ethel McLennan in pencil.
