He was educated at the Universities of Melbourne (BA, PhD) and Oxford (MA) and became Ernest Scott Professor of History at the University of Melbourne 1966-75. He has written a number of biographies, including one on the chemist, Sir Russell Grimwade. Poynter held various academic positions within the University of Melbourne from 1953 including: Dean Faculty of Arts 1971-1973; Dean Faculty of Music, Visual and Performing Arts 1991-1993; Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research) from 8th April, 1975 to 4th April, 1982; Deputy Vice Chancellor from 5th April, 1982, to 31st December, 1988; Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) from 1st January, 1989, to 31st December, 1990; and Assistant Vice Chancellor (Cultural Affairs) from 1st January, 1991, to 31st December 1994. Other roles, appointments and honours include; Section Editor, Australian Dictionary of Biography 1978-1990; Chevalier des Palmes Academiques 1980; AO 1989; Professorial Associate, Australian Centre from 1995; Australian Secretary of the Rhodes Trust; and President, Citizens Welfare Service 1972-1991. He is also a Fellow (and one-time Dean) of Trinity College (1953-1964).The contents of this series are varied but a major portion is made up of minutes of meetings and papers of external associations or institutions of which Professor Poynter was a member in a personal capacity. The files reflect Professor Poynter's personal involvement with private and municipal institutions and societies ranging from Trinity College, the Australian Institute of International Affairs to the Association des membres de l'ordre des Palmes Academiques and the Citizens Welfare Service of Victoria (where he served as President from 1972-1991). There are a number of records representing Ponter's early academic work including drafts, annotations and typed manuscripts for his PhD thesis, "The debate on the English poor law, 1795-1820". Other drafts relate to histories/papers entitled "Society and Pauperism: English Ideas on Poor Relief, 1795-1834", "The debate on the English poor law, 1795-1820" and historical works regarding Russell Grimwade and Thomas Malthus.
