The photographs were collected by Australian architect Edward George Kilburn in 1889 during nine months of travel in Europe and America. The photographs appear to have been sourced from commercial photographers. Most photographs have been annotated in pencil, presumably by Kilburn. The detail and accuracy of these annotations vary greatly.ArrangementPhotographs were arranged by Kilburn in 21 sequences, loosely subdivided by location and subject. Location, subjects and the number of prints in the sequence are noted on a strip of translucent paper affixed to the last image in the sequence. Each sequence is numbered, but that number is only unique to its location, for example America 1, Britain 1, France 1 etc. The numbering of sequences is not continuous and may indicate that these photographs formed part of a larger series.
The photographs are annotated in pencil with a two part numbering system consisting of the sequence number and a continuous running number, ie. 1/1, 1/2, 1/3 etc. This number is retained in the Other IDs field. Some sequences are incomplete based on the numbering and information on the sequence strip.Archival HistoryThese photographs were discovered in the Faculty of Architecture Library by the librarian John Maidment, wrapped in newspapers dating from 1934. Professor Miles Lewis conducted extensive research on the provenance and subjects of the photographs. The American photographs have been indexed on Professor Lewis's website at https://www.mileslewis.net/kilburns-photos.
