[UMA-SRE-20130135] WELFARE PHOTOGRAPHS & PUBLICATIONS
Description
IdentifierUMA-SRE-20130135Extent3 boxesLinear Meterage0.24Scope and ContentThis collection primarily comprises photographs published by the British and Victorian Governments of social welfare activities and institutions, for example, visits by social workers to orphanages and foster homes, and photographs of the Winlaton Youth Training Centre in suburban Melbourne, (Nunawading). The photographs were collected by Ms Donella Jaggs, who had an active policy career in both jurisdictions and later lectured at RMIT. Also included are three publications reflecting the moral flavour of much of social work in the 20th Century.ArrangementThere is no order apparent in the photographs. The series was transferred from the RMIT Social Policy Archive where it had been transferred in the 1990s as part of a collection strategy to capture the records of community sector organisations operating in the welfare sector. Within the SPA, these records were identified as series 87-89 and were combined into a single series during processing at the UMA. It was the practice of the SPA to item number material in order of its receipt irrespective of the series it was later allocated; these item numbers and generally their order have been retained. The 'Title' recorded for each item/ file is the original title that was written on the outside of the envelope housing the photographs. It is unclear if this was written by the Welfare Department or Donnella Jaggs herself.
All Victorian photographs in this collection have been digitised, however due to copyright restrictions these have not been published online. The titles of the photographs are those that are written on the verso of the photograph, or where no title was present a title has been imposed by the archivist listing the collection. Only nine photographs have names of children recorded with the photograph, these are items: UMA-ITE-2013013500023, UMA-ITE-2013013500043, UMA-ITE-2013013500044, UMA-ITE-2013013500045, UMA-ITE-2013013500046, UMA-ITE-2013013500047, UMA-ITE-2013013500048, UMA-ITE-2013013500049 and UMA-ITE-2013013500055.
