IdentifierUMA-SRE-20000068Extentl volumeScope and ContentBackground The Joint Matriculation Advisory Committee was loosely established in 1959 and formally established in 1960. It met for the first time in July of that year. It grew out of a proposal in 1959 for joint discussions between Monash University and the University of Melbourne regarding problems relating to the Matriculation Regulation. On the 2nd of March 1960 the Professorial Board agreed to the proposal that a Joint Matriculation Advisory Committee be set up to advise both universities on the establishment of a jointly administered and controlled Matriculation Examination. The committee was to consist of four representatives from Monash University, special members of the Schools Board, the Technical Colleges Board and the Special Matriculation Committee of the University of Melbourne. The committee appears to have met several times a year to discuss the conduct of the Matriculation Examination,the prescription of courses, course requirements, the structure and constitution of the Schools Board and the possibility of replacing the Schools Board with a joint matriculation advisory board. A draft statute forthe creation of a Victorian Universities and Schools Examinations Board which would be representative of both Monash University and the University of Melbourne was brought before the Professorial Board in 1961. Discussions ensued and amendments to the draft statute were made, some on the advice of the Parliamentary Draftsman The Victorian Universities and Schools Examinations Board was enacted by statute on the 4th of May 1964.
