There are motions pertaining to the appointment of academic staff, the foundation of faculties and departments, the library, ad eundem degrees, course content, fees, examinations, examiners, the conferring of degrees, memorial funds, prizes, scholarships and exhibitions. There are references to University regulations and statutes, the Council procedure and details of members, the Registrar's position and organisation of his office, and the creation of and business with other University committees, as well as the usual financial matters, e.g. accounts, University buildings and grounds. Not all motions were carried.
During the years 1853-1864 the fate of the motion is recorded, and in one case (G.W. Rusden's motion in respect of graduates of other universities, 15 May 1855) the argument in favour is given in full. Later entries give the text of the motion only.
