The following subjects are discussed: academic matters which include the appointment of staff, salaries, course content, examinations, examiners, the conferring of degrees, scholarships, exhibitions and prizes, the library and links with other tertiary institutions. There are references to finance and accounts, legal matters, University grounds and buildings, the reports of committees, Council procedure and details of members, military cadetships, military employment and the Melbourne University Corps. Ceremonial arrangements for visitations are of special interest, e.g. by H.R.H. Prince Alfred and the Duke of Normanby. The death of the Chancellor, Sir Anthony Brownless, is recorded in volume III. "This was the last letter of the poor old gentleman. He died on 3 December, 1897 in the University buildings above the Registrar's office."
