In 1959, a Board of Trustees, headed by Mr George Swinburne, a distinguished Ear, Nose and Throat specialist, was set up for the establishment of the Chair.An Executive Committee of the Board, chaired by Mr Swinburne, was formed to help raise a sum large enough to endow a chair at the University of Melbourne. It comprised a number of business and civic leaders. An Otolaryngology Appeal (also referred to as the Ear, Nose and Throat [ENT] Appeal)was formally launched at the University of Melbourne with the assistance of the Appeals Committee of Council on the 21st of February 1964. The Executive Committee of the Board does not appear to have met after April 1964. The records which comprise the series include: Correspondence between George Swinburne and the Appeals Committee of Council; Promotionalmaterial including draft brochures for the launch of the Appeal; Minutes of the Executive Committee of the ENT Appeal; Lists of guests at the launch of the Appeal; Correspondence soliciting donations; Publicity and correspondence with newspapers; Lists of donors and distribution of donations and a donations pay-in book. Included among the correspondence are photographs of children and a folder of newspaper clippings relating to the Appeal.
