IdentifierUMA-SRE-20050062Extent1 volumeScope and ContentThe Experimental First year Committee of the Faculty of Arts was established under University regulation 3.5.2, in response to a perception that some first year students were insufficiently prepared for the university environment. This was considered to be evidenced by the high first year drop out rate. The intention was 'that prior to establishment of an experimental first year, a committee should be established to investigate whether, and to what extent, current first year programs are failing". (Faculty of Arts Committee: 26th March 1975)
Initially intended to put a submission to faculty at it's first meeting for 1975, it was quickly realised that the task was more complicated than anticipated, with a number of different submissions placed before the committee for consideration. The work of the committee included:
-to gather details of course options and make recommendations.
-to deal with budgetary implications of the scheme.
-recommend appointments
-work out course implementation arrangements
-submit proposals to faculty for approval
In the event, a number of different programs were trialled, including a 'special
studies' program.
For 1978, it was decided that the work of the committee should be divided between two; the special studies committee, and the experimental first year project committee.
