IdentifierUMA-SRE-20030051Extent1 volumeScope and ContentIn December 1974 the University Research and Graduate Studies Committee made a special grant of $15,000 to the Faculty of Arts to facilitate research in the faculty. The grant was made on the condition that the funding would be matched dollar for dollar by the faculty. This funding was provided partly due to a perception that the Faculty was lacking in research profile by comparison to those in similar institutions. There was a requirement to report to the Committee on Research and Graduate Studies Committee on the success of the special funding at the conclusion of 1975. It was hoped to attract more ARGC grants as a consequence of a heightened research profile. In response to this, the Research Development Fund was established, and a supervising committee established. The first meeting was held on 10th December 1974, at which it was established that the matching funds would be collected by means of a 15 percent levy on the basic research grants of departments. Subsequently the committee was divided into three sections to administer the three basic types of grants envisaged: Travel Grants General Grants Publication Grants The final meeting was conducted on 12th September 1975. It was resolved that the project had been a success, and that it should be recommended for continuance in subsequent years. With this in mind, grant recipients were to be encouraged to report on the stimulative effects of the funding on their research. There is, however, no evidence of continued funding subsequent to 1975. This volume contains the complete set of minutes and papers of the committee.
