IdentifierUMA-SRE-20000083ExtentPart of one volumeScope and ContentThe earliest published reference to a General Board of Examiners at Primary Examinations (also referred to as a General Board of Primary examiners) appears in the 1905 Calendar on pages 337-352. In these pages, reference is made tochanges and repeals of existing statutes and regulations regarding applications for examinerships and the appointment and tenure of examiners (Statutes III and IX) in public examinations. Under the newly substituted divisions of Statute IX , the categories of Public Examinations are listed as follows: A-General B-Primary Examination C-Junior Public Examination D-Senior Public Examination E-Junior Commercial Examination F-Senior Commercial Examination The examiners for Public Examinations were appointed by Council after consideration by the Professorial Board and the appropriate Faculty. The examiners appointed for each subject within each category of public examinations would constitute a board to decide upon matters relating to each category and the subjects within each category. Under the terms of the new regulations, the boards were to meet to consider and report to the Professorial Board on all matters relating to the examinations. The ex-officio chairman of the General Boards would be the President of the Professorial Board.This series was created by the General Board of Primary Examiners which was comprised of the examiners for the Primary Examinations and the various subjects within that category-Composition and Writing, English, Geography and British History; Arithmetic, Algebra and Geometry; French, German, Latin and Greek; ElementaryPhysical Science and Botany; Drawing and Music. It is unclear for how long this board was in existence. While the minutes described here were kept separately from those of the Professorial Board and cover the years of 1905 to 1908, details of the Primary Examiners Board appear sporadically in the Minute Books of the Professorial Board after this time until 1914 but other than this, no explicit mention of its demise is made. Summary of Contents TheGeneral Board of Primary Examiners met to discuss matters in connection with the Primary Examination such as setting and standard of examination questions, content of examinations and suggestions of changes to the Professorial Board. NB-The volume in which the series first appears is labelled "Mining 1904-1909 Primary Examiners at Public Examinations" along with three other series, all separate. These are: UM755 Veterinary Committee Minutes UM753 Minutes of a Conference between the Faculties of Science and Engineering and Representatives of the Marine Board UM890 Minutes of the Board of Examiners at Public Senior and Junior Examinations Note on Format Series is in a volume labelled "Mining 1904-1909 Primary Examiners at Public Examinations" along with three other series, all separate. Volume is bound in calfskin with chipped spine and edges.
