IdentifierUMA-SRE-20000010Extent5 vols.Scope and ContentAgency Description/Administrative History Under Part I Section 13 Change of Constitution of the University of Melbourne Act 1923, the council and convocation and standing committee of convocation "respectively shall be and be deemed to be duly and legally constituted...in this Act;" Under these terms, the Senate was abolished and replaced with the Standing Committee of Convocation. Convocation, as outlined in Sections 15 and 15 of the Act would: . consist of all graduates of the University of Melbourne . elect one of its own members to be warden. hold at least one annual ordinary meeting and special meetings as provided for by standing orders . have the authority to submit suggestions as to the affairs of the University to Council The Standing Committee of Convocation as outlined in Sections 16 and 18 of the Act: . would consist of the warden ex-officio and not less than forty other members of Convocation . could not originate any statute or regulation, but could amend any statute or regulation submitted to it by Council for its approval and could return the same so amended for the further consideration of Council. The Constitution of the Standing Committee of Convocation remained unchanged until 1974. The Melbourne University (Amendment) Act of 1974(Amending the Melbourne University Act made the following amendments: . Convocation to be called The Graduates of the University and its standing committee to be known as the Graduate Committee . The warden was to be renamed The President of the Graduates By Act number 10238 (Royal Assent 10/12/85) the Graduates of the University and Graduate Committee were renamed Convocation and the Committee of Convocation. Currently (as at 1998) the mission of the Committee of Convocation has been outlined as follows: To assist the University in the fulfillment of its mission through representing graduates in the University and representing the University in the community of graduates. The first meeting of the Standing Committee of Convocation was held on the 25th of March, 1924. Contents: The attendance books provide a record of the date, time and venue of each meeting and sitting of convocation and list the names of the members of Convocation present. Notice papers outlining committee business (agenda papers) list the following for discussion: Confirmation of Minutes; Notices of motion; Amendments to statutes and regulations; Council amendments; Scholarships; Tenure and Council submissions. Note About Format Volume1 (1924-1944) consists of handwritten entries and typed agenda papers pasted on lined paper bound in calfskin. Spine of ledger is cracked and binding is loose. Ledger is kept in acid-free slipcase secured with string. Volume 2 (1944-1957) consists of handwritten and typed extracts on paper bound in calfskin. Ledger is wrapped in plain paper wrapper. Volume 3 (1958-1963) consists of handwritten entries and typed agenda papers pasted on lined paper bound in calfskin. Spine of ledger is cracked and binding is loose. Ledger is kept in acid-free slipcase secured with string. Volume 4 (1968-1973) consists of handwritten and typed entries on lined and plain paper bound in a cardboard ledger. Ledger is reinforced by vinyl tape, spine is cracked, boards are loose and some pages are in mylar envelopes. Volume is kept in acid-free slipcase secured with string. Volume 5 (1974-1976) consists of handwritten and typed entries on paper bound in a cardboard ledger. Ledger is severely damaged and loose and is kept in an acid-free slipcase secured with string.
