IdentifierUMA-SRE-20140075Extent8 boxesLinear Meterage1.01Scope and ContentAs mail was received in the central Registry, it was classified and then recorded onto these cards. Each piece of incoming correspondence was recorded. The cards record the year, the card heading, date received, date of the letter, who the letter is from, a precis of contents (usually 1 or 2 lines), card number, the file onto which the correspondence was placed and to whom the file was referred. The cards were also used as an aide memoire for the classifier who could check on which file similar material was placed. Occasionally the series is used to trace whether a piece of mail was received. Within the annual sequences, the divisions of internal and external indicate whether the mail originates inside the university or not. Both these divisions have many further subdivisions. Internal is subdivided into a sequence for the top administrators - e.g. Vice Chancellor, Registrar; an alphabetical sequence of administrative sections; an alphabetical sequence of faculties and another for internal committees.
