In this role he was required to develop a cultural policy at the University of Melbourne; provide input regarding strategic planning; liaise with External Affairs staff to ensure publicity for Melbourne University's arts and cultural events; oversee the broad direction as well as advocate the value of University collections such as those held in Archives, the Grainger Museum, Ian Potter Gallery etc.; liaise with Faculties regarding relevant cultural issues, and so on. The material in this transfer broadly comprises: drafts and input into strategic and policy documents for the University of Melbourne, in the areas of Arts / Culture; liaison with Faculty staff regarding collections management, cultural issues, awards, grants and so on; information regarding key Melbourne arts /cultural identities (Richard Gillespie, Dinny O'Hearn, Chris Wallace-Crabbe etc.); information regarding University of Melbourne issues and significant items/artefacts (art works and cultural collections, Wilson Hall organ, old Cyrillic typewriters etc.); liaison with external organisations such as Museum Victoria, Scienceworks, Council of Australian University Museums and Collections (CAUMAC) etc.; minutes and agendas of various committees (both internal and external); extensive liaison with External Affairs so as to publicise cultural events at the University of Melbourne; information regarding Melbourne University collections / entities including Medical History Collection, Archives, Grainger Museum, Melbourne Theatre Company, Art collection, Donald Thomson Collection, Ian Potter Gallery etc.; input into job descriptions for cultural roles at the University of Melbourne and; input into various Victorian and Australian arts proposals and cultural frameworks, e.g. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artefacts, cultural trends and issues. John Poynter retired from the university and also from the role as Assistant Vice-Chancellor (Cultural Affairs) at the end of 1994.
