Professor Cooke went on to release a number of publications about working with musically gifted children and the genesis of his work can be seen in this series. At the time Cooke was Dean there was a great deal of debate within and outside Melbourne University regarding academic education for musicians versus practical debate. Despite the Victorian College of the Arts having opened in 1974, Cooke continued to champion the Faculty's role in practical music.
