The organisation of the files is via the file title of the Faculty /area making the submission/s. On 21 October 1983 John Poynter, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, sent out a memorandum regarding the Research Promotion Grants Scheme to Deans and Chairmen of Departments announcing ".. $500,000 to stimulate research in the University and to support research excellence..". This was a pilot scheme and if it was felt a success, it would become an annual scheme. The Committee on Research and Graduate Studies was to administer the scheme and would select successful projects, with recommendations then being forwarded on to the Finance Committee. The Faculties of Arts, Engineering, Medicine and Science had to submit applications by 24 November. Applications were due from Agriculture, Architecture and Planning, Dental Science, Economics and Commerce, Education, Law, Music, Veterinary Science and Department of Social by 18 November. There were 2 types of grants: Type A - $20,000-$50,000 for the support of large team projects or for high priority of individual projects and Type B - $10,000-$20,000 for the support of small teams, groups or individuals. It was intended that expenditure occur within 1 year of receipt of monies, however, consideration for expenditure to carry over two years would also be considered. The applications comprise the following sections: A. Front sheet (1. Principal Investigator, 2. Appointment, 3. Department, 4. Title of Project, 5. Appropriate Publications, 6. Grants from other bodies in the last 3 years, 7. Signature of Chairman of Department, 8. References, 9. Category of Request and 10. Total sum requested) and B. Project Description Sheets (1. Title of the project, 2. Category of Research, 3. Aims of Project, 4. Description of the Project, 5. Budget, 6. Justification of Budget, 7. Previous and current funding for the project, 8. Potential for outside funding, 9. Names of Project Personnel, 10. Human or Animal Experimentation or Biohazards, 11. Bibliography. Categories of records held within the series include correspondence between Directors/Heads/Deans of Schools/Departments/Faculties and the Office for Research and Graduate Studies regarding the scheme; and attached applications for Research Promotion Grants. There is also one folder that holds general information regarding the nature of the scheme (see box 3). Each Faculty appears to have selected the best applications and generally, the Faculty or area summarise the number of applications, amount of funds being sought and details pertaining to the method / principles of selection. There are Records Services files for the Research Promotion Grants spanning 1983-1985 so it appears the scheme ran for several years.
