IdentifierUMA-SRE-20140111Extent1 boxLinear Meterage0.12Scope and ContentRupert Gordon Renton, Leading Aircraftsman RAAF, of 172 Munro Street, West Coburg, who died on 30 September 1944, bequeathed to the University his residuary estate “ for the purpose of rendering assistance to needy students”. The funds became available from 1947. part of the original capital was used to assist ex-servicemen from 1948-1950. The net annual income of the fund was to be applied by Council on the recommendation of the Student Loans Fund and Bursary Committee to assist students in need. A resolution of Council on 5 April 1948 decided that the income and residue should be held in trust for the purpose of assisting needy students at the discretion of the Vice-Chancellor. From 6 July 1971, funds were made available to the student counsellor "to make grants to students in need of urgent financial assistance". Advances exceeding $25 had to be approved by the Registrar or an Assistant Registrar. Students who had previously received assistance were able to receive additional assistance from the fund. The original amount provided was £2,702 and as at 24 July 1951, the capital stood at £2,100 and the annual income £66. The fund amount as at 23 September 2005 was $23,991.81. At some stage the fund was revoked.
