Agent TypeOrganisationActivities & OccupationsTrade UnionsHistoryThe AEU (before 1920 known as the Amalgamated Society of Engineers; since 1970 part of the Amalgamated Metal Workers and Shipwrights Union) was established in Australia in 1851 by emigrant British engineers as a branch of the British union. The union has been a pre-eminent force in labour politics, especially during the power struggles after 1945. The Melbourne District Youth Committee was one of many AEU Youth Committees established during the Second World War to give apprentice metal trades workers a sporting, social and union outlet. In 1943 one of their first actions was to present a five-point program of changes in apprentice working conditions to the District Committee of the AEU. The free newsletter 'Young Engineer' issued during the War gained new acceptance and circulation under the editorship of John Rowe. The Youth Committee lasted into the 1960s.
