Agent TypePersonHistoryThe 9 May 1901 Federation celebration in Melbourne was the culmination of a week of Federation festivities. The Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York progressed through the city from Government House to address the new House of Representatives at the Exhibition Building. Hundreds of thousands watched bands, floats and marchers. The trade union movement was represented in the march with a float celebrating the Eight Hour Day and other floats bearing trade union banners. During the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York's Federation tour in 1901 a dozen temporary arches were erected in Melbourne's city and suburbs to celebrate the historic event. Most were made of plaster and were temporary structures.
