He graduated in medicine and was employed as a chemical clerk and later assistant physician and demonstrator in physiology at St Bartholomews in London. Cole emigrated to Australia in 1881 and on his arrival in Melbourne in 1882 registered on the Medical Board of Victoria as a medical practioner. Dr Cole was later an associate of Dr. John Williams.
