The union was originally created in 1911 as the Amalgamated Tinsmiths, Sheet Metal Workers, Cannister Makers, Gas Meter Makers and Assistants ]Unon. By 1913 it was registered as the Sheet Metal Working Industrial Union of Australia. The Journal was established with the intention of informing all members, giving expression to their demands and strengthening the solidarity of the organization. In 1973 the union amalgamated with other metal union to form the Amalgamated Metal Workers' Union. The journal provides a comprehensive record of the union's activities and includes Victorian branch notes, many identified photographs of officials and members, comment on political and social issues. A full set has been made up from this accession and a donation of 10 volumes from Judith McNolty, daughter of the late official, Ron McNolty, to the AMWU and transferred by the union to UMA in 2001
