The Sheet Metal Worker was established in 1936 as the official organ of the Sheet Metal Working Industrial Union of Australia. The union was originally created in 1911 as the Amalgamated Tinsmiths, Sheet Metal Workers, Cannister Makers, Gas Meter Makers and Assistants Unon. By 1913 it was registered as the Sheet Metal Working Industrial Union of Australia. The Journal was established with the intention of informing all members, giving expression to their demands and strengthening the solidarity of the organization. In 1973 the union amalgamated with other metal union to form the Amalgamated Metal Workers' Union.
