She returned to Melbourne after being briefly interned by the Japanese and Sergei was forced to remain. In 1946, the Army gave Gittins the chance to return to Hong Kong where she found Sergei in hospital suffering from tubercullosis. Arrangements were made for his hospitalisation in Melbourne where he remained and married Jean Gittins. Both subsequently worked for the Pathology Department at the University of Melbourne. After a long illness, Sergei Hohlov died of cancer in 1966.
