Membership of the KVMA rose to 1200, and it submitted to the Government 27,000 signatures in a petition to save the site. With the aid of the National Trust, the Combined Pensioners Association, the Brotherhood of Saint Lawrence, residents' associations, the Australian Labor Party, Democratic Labor Party and the Builders Labourers Federation, the Market was retained. Margaret Sadie Ericksen, former wife of Ray Frances Stanley Ericksen (q.v.), was a prominent member of the Association.
