After some years at the Melbourne and Children's Hospitals and two years' experience in Britain he had by the outbreak of the war entered upon research involving blood transfusions and blood preservation techniques leading to the establishment of blood banking in Australia. After war service in various military hospitals in the Middle East, Australia and New Guinea, he joined the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research as Assistant Director and Head of the Clinical Research Unit in association with the Royal Melbourne Hospital.
