The letter is written on folded writing paper the first page of which is printed "Newsletter of Australasia; a Narrative to Send to Friends. No.58. June 1861, and with illustrations of "Aboriginal Courtship", and scenes of mining. Printed and Published for the Proprietors, at the "Herald" Office, 9 Bourke Street East, Melbourne. John describes the murder of Aborigines by another group, an incident represented in a scene on the front of the Newsletter which occurred near to his house, the parties being known to him; shooting with Alfred Lewis and a visit to the "Great Gippsland Lakes"; a choral service in Sale Church; prospects of returning to England and a dance.
