These materials were bequeathed to the Department of History in 1951 to augment resources for the teaching of British History.
Collection comprises photographic portraits of Emily Jessie Ashdown; photographs of models wearing reproduction costumes made by her (illustrations for her book British Costume During XIX Centuries); promotional material for lectures, including 'The Dress of our Ancestors', 'Arms and Armour', 'Monastic Habits'; full text of her presentation 'The Rose of Raby' accompanied by research notes for this work about Cicely Neville; miscellaneous research notes, photographs and illustrations; a catalogue for specialist costume supplier Robert White & Sons, London. Charles Ashdown's research notes about castles; a number of the postcards he produced in series called 'Castles in their Glory' with some correspondence about obtaining sets of these for schools; newscuttings.
Also, lantern slides which may have been used in presentations and for providing source material for illustrations in publications by the Ashdowns; files concerning St Albans and district, including the Roman town of Verulam; St Albans Pageant book, 1907 and flyer for the celebrations; programmes for entertainment at the Grammar School, St Albans (CH Ashdown, Stage Manager, EJ Ashdown, Mistress of the Robes).
