[UMA-SRE-20130055] UNIVERSITY BUILDING DRAWINGS BY BUILDING NUMBER
Description
IdentifierUMA-SRE-20130055Extentnot specifiedScope and ContentThe drawings in this series were transferred from Property and Campus Services in eight vertical plan cabinets after a selection process which eliminated duplicates and paper copies of original electronic CAD drawings. The system of arrangement of the majority of these drawings is as follows. Each drawing has an alphanumeric control number made up of the following elements: discipline, building number, year of creation, and sequence within the set of drawings. Disciplines are: A for Architectural; S for Structural; M for Mechanical; H for Hydraulic; E for Electrical. Buildings within the University are numbered from 101 on. The control number A101.5505 therefore indicates an architectural drawing for building number 101 Beaurepaire Centre, from 1955, number 5 in the sequence. The best way to search for drawings in the Archives database is by keyword using the name of the building: the alphanumeric code will then reveal the discipline and date of the drawing.
When they arrived at Archives, the first three cabinets were found to contain drawings in building number order from 101 on for the Architectural and Structural disciplines. The second three cabinets were found to contain drawings in building number order from 101 on for the Mechanical, Hydraulic and Electrical disciplines. This arrangement was not always consistent, with a number of architectural and structural drawings stored with the mechanical, and vice versa.
The remaining two cabinets contained drawings of the University’s campus Grounds and Underground Services. Each drawing has an alphanumeric control number made up of the following elements: code for precinct of the University, year of creation, and sequence within the set of drawings. The system of arrangement for Grounds drawings has changed over time with many being top numbered as methods of mapping precincts of the University were updated. Areas of the University were once identified on an alphanumeric grid and some of these grid numbers are still used to identify drawings where the number starts with an alphanumeric code such as C05 followed by the year and the sequence number.
This arrangement has been superseded by codes where each code relates to a key precinct of the Parkville and other campuses under which each drawing is filed. Drawings of the Grounds carry the following numbers: 001 Physics Complex; 002 Monash Road; 003 Alice Hoy & 1888; 004 Union Lawn; 005 Engineering Precinct; 006 The Courts; 007 Professors Walk; 008 South Lawn; 009 Vice Chancellor & Medley; 010 System Garden; 011 Music & Forestry; 012 Medical Centre; 013 Eastern Precinct; 014 Maintenance; 015 Sports Complex; 016 Miscellaneous; 016 and 017 Southern Precinct; 018 Western Precinct; 021 Werribee; 029 Medley Hall; 030 and 031 Other.
The system of arrangement for Underground Services is complex. Areas of the University were originally designated by numbers which were superseded by a range of alphabetical codes. Some codes found on the drawings include: G for Grounds - including GC and GD for Gardens; UGE Underground Electrical; SP Steam Pipes; COM Data and Communications; CSS Schematic Control Diagram; SW Storm Water; N Traffic Management; and others. In all cases the code is followed by the year of the project and the sequence number of the drawing.
