The trowel is embossed sterling silver with an ivory handle and has been given the item number 2013.0112.0186. This trowel was used to the Honourable Edward Langton when laying the memorial stone of what was in 1891 the 'New Premises' at 395 Collins Street, corner of Collins and Queen Streets. The inscription in the trowel is: 'Presented to the HON EDWARD LANGTON on the occasion the New Premises for the National Mutual Life Association of Australasia Limited, 28 July 1891'. The trowel is in a shaped leather case with padded interior supplied by: Wm Drummond & Co, Manufacturing Jewellers, Collins Street West, Melbourne. It is assumed that Drummonds provided the trowel and case. The trowel was offered to National Mutual in April 1981 by Mrs Margaret Bertuch, a member of the Langton Family group.
