Communication Records were used by the Head Office Communications Department (early years known as General manager's Department) for registering all INCOMING and OUTGOING official letters in the "L", "C" and "P" series letters between Head Office and Branches. The top of the page shows "Communications Record", "Series" (whether L, C or P), "To/From", "Branch and "Year". Sub-headings showed "Day/Month", "No." (letter number commencin at No 1 each year), "Our Dept" (HO Div/Dep), "Subject" (Headinf) and "Reply" (the answering letter number to the Branch letter or N/A if no answer required. This column is not used in respect of OUTGOING letters). These records are separate for each Branch ans separate for each series (L,C,or P). OUTGOING multiple addressee letter numbers would be entered in each addressee branch register. If nine addressees, the details had to be entered nine times. In 1977 the design of the register was changed to allow for all branch letter number sequences to be shown on one page. However, the numbering system was discontinued from 30 November 1978. From 1 December 1978 letters were identified by heading and date. Registration was handled by HO Div/Dept only.
