Frank Horace Johnston was appointed as Accountant in March 1928. His previous position at the University was that of Correspondence Clerk to which he was appointed on 1 August 1925. On 1 March 1947 Frank Horace Johnston was appointed Registrar of the University, a position he held until retirement on 29 February, 1968.
The series contains material on salaries for academic and administrative staff; reclassification of positions; finances of individual faculties and departments; building plans for Chemistry, Commerce, Dentistry, Engineering and the Union; development of the Diploma in Social Studies. Noteworthy items include the proposal to create an Institute of Technology in Victoria, and the development of engineering training; freedom of speech within the University; proposals to adopt the free University principle; arrangements for students during the war years and planning for education during the post war period.
The series also consists of copies of outwards correspondence. There is also original correspondence on file and copies of background papers and reports.
