Evidence suggests that it was the informal title of the Board of Management of the Equine Research Trust (later Equine Research Fund) which was founded by the Victorian Racing Club. The Trust was initiated by the Club by offering 10,000 pounds per year for three years to be used by the Faculty of Veterinary Science at the University of Melbourne for research on horses on behalf of the Club. A Board of Management was established in December 1964, to consist of the Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Science, two representatives from the University of Melbourne and two representatives from the Victorian Racing Club. The Equine Research Fund was incorporated as a public company under the Companies Ordinance on the 16th of December 1974. No further reference to the Equine Research Fund Committee exists after this.
