It is the product of two bodies of miscellaneous material amalgamated to form one series. This material was largely comprised of loose, unfiled and unregistered dockets that had been subjected to rearrangement several times both in the last and present century and did not appear to be part of a discernable system. The series is comprised of inwards correspondence, some of which is unregistered and therefore has no file or docket number, some registered inwards correspondence with docket numbers and printed material. The series contains the earliest known pieces of the University's inwards correspondence. The series is Volume 1 of UM459.
The correspondence covers such subjects as: Accommodation for classes; Accounts and Finance; Student Admission Ad Eundum Statum; Colleges; Foundation of chairs; Recognition of clinical schools; Annual reports; Funds; Appeals; Prizes and Scholarships; Faculty reports; Letters of thanks to senior members of staff; Vice-Chancellor's correspondence; Buildings and grounds; Boarding houses; Schools; Applications for certification of practical work; Elections for Vice-Chancellor; Statements of staff duties; Medals; Staff salaries; Conservatorium of Music; Council papers; List of degree candidates; Requests to asylums for bodies for dissection; Donations and Bequests; Examinations; Grants; Appeals; Matriculation; Museum; Porters; Staff accommodation; University Regulations; Rifle Corps; Student complaints; the Smithsonian Institute; Telephone and telegraphic communications; Appointment of University bookseller; and the education of Roman Catholics.
