Historical note - Commencing on 9 July 1935 as the Melbourne University Society for Investigation and Research, it became The McCoy Society (in memory of Professor Sir Frederick McCoy) on 1 August and adopted the above name on 30 October. Formed at the suggestion of Vice-Chancellor Priestley and with the advice of Professor Wood-Jones, Dr. Gwynneth Buchanan and Dr. Reuben Patton, a Provisional Committee was elected to prepare a constitution and the inaugural Meeting was held on 16 August 1935. The Society arranged scientific field trips and issued reports. This photograph was taken during one of the scientific field trips.
